Tunisia

I bought a new Patricia Highsmith novel the other day. Earlier this year, I decided to stray from re-reading my same favorites: The Ripley Triad and Deep Water. The latter of which I can read again and again and again. Oh, and Strangers on the Train. Another great one.

First, back in January I read The Price of Salt which was written under a pseudonym since it had some pretty strong girl-girl emotions (some call it a big part of the Lesbian Pulp movement) and I loved it. 1950s New York? Fab.

Now I'm reading The Tremor of Forgery, set in the mid-1960s in Tunisia. It's a simple, subtle, character-driven novel and oh-so-Highsmith. I keep wondering when he's going to murder someone (given the previous material) but so far, he hasn't. I like her forwardness of the homosexual Jensen but how she treat it so plainly. Not from the inside, and not from the outside.

I don't have Tunisia on my list of places to visit and frankly it's not even near the high priority. But a mid-1960s beach bungalow with a charade of interesting expats from around the world hanging out, seemingly with no purpose other than to be and experience, check check check.

Heard from the cruising parentals finally as they left the dock in Athens. I've followed their every move for the trip and it's been fun. Glad they were able to check in. Off they go to Venice. Jealous!

Tschüß!
