Biking accident and Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine

After feeling wretched from too much beer and only Bretzen (Pretzels) for dinner, we forced ourselves into our shopping day. Munich has great department stores and it was a perfect day to get lost in them.

While Karstadt is a great place we really loved Oberpollinger. Good cafeteria, really intriguing brands and it just looked really cool. I also purchased my Deutschland soccer jersey and had my boy Thomas Müller printed on it.

Then a break for a beer as the Saturday crowds were getting heady. At the base of the Frauenkirche we enjoyed a Maß as the mid-afternoon church bells chattered around us, more specifically on top of us

Later we grabbed dinner at Andy’s Krablerhaus; this is where we arrived at 22:05 the night before and Andy sadly had informed us that “kein mehr Essen, nur Getränken.” This time Andy happily sat us in a sprawling Beirgarten with huge towering trees above. The all-male staff, including the chefs, bustled efficiently serving up Schnitzels and Hausgemacht Cordon Blue (they had an Asparagus/Spargel special that looked really good—it’s Spargel season and every decent restaurant has a Spargel special menu). I went with the Rinderrouladen since it’s Ryan’s favorite dish that I make and I had to get some comparisons. (I need to make my meat thinner, roll them thicker, and make a mean gravy to go with.) Ryan had Schnitzel with mushroom sauce.

A bit later, Ryan had a biking accident. Thankfully all seems ok but we were biking around the southern part of the city and were trying to avoid an intersection under construction and utterly confusing. The next street over was quieter but was lined with Tram tracks. Ryan’s tire being a bit thinner than mine, as we turned left his tire and rim caught in the tram track and stopped his bike, throwing him over the handlebars and rolling down the dark München street. I had heard “No no no” as it happened and turned to see Ryan rolling like Indiana Jones, his head avoiding the ground. I dropped my bike and ran back to him. A young woman immediately stepped into the street saying, “Are you ok? Are you hurt?”

Ryan checked himself and we didn’t see blood, we did not see protruding bones, we didn’t see torn clothes. “My pride isn’t ok but I am,” he declared. We walked our bikes off the street and took a moment to collect ourselves. That could have been so bad.

His ribs and back hurt, but he seems to be ok for now. We know the second day is going to really show what he did to his body. All the working out saved him. His lats are stronger and that’s where he hit. His arms are stronger and that’s why he didn’t bust an elbow or wrist.

We had previously scoped our a bar, “Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine” and had an uplifting time with the locals over way cheap beers and incredible music.

The ride back home went fine and finally around 2 we fell asleep.

Up early at 7:30 to catch our high-speed train out of München to Nürnberg for a day trip. So far this trip has included cities we’ve been to before; it has been a rewarding and deep look of München. We haven’t stepped in a single museum or church yet. Just finding out what people who actually live here do.

Tonight will be our final night in München before we drive into the Tirolian Alps and start the second half of our trip. We need to do some laundry and pack up some of the fun goodies we bought here.

I’m pretty excited, we have our own unlocked phone with a German telephone number that we’ve been using to get data cheaply. We bought our Deutsche Bahn train tickets on the app and didn’t have to print anything out. Talk about looking like you live here.

The day is beautiful and Bavarian fields slip by the train in a relaxing, beautiful blur.

Tschüss!
