Less than 48 hours to Frankfurt
We've been planning this trip for several months and even I wrote a post back in May 2015 about a trip in 2016. Although, a few things popped up in between that post and today pushing our "April" trip back a few months to August 2016. In between, a trip to Hawaii in August 2015 (unpublished), Los Angeles in June 2015 (unpublished). Those who follow this blog know why they go unpublished and for a time this blog was private. It's public again.
The Packing Trials
Over the past several weeks, I've put us through the normal packing trials accentuated by bullet journaling this time around but the list being a play off the original penultimate 2006 list from a decade ago.
To be honest, we've slacked in the past few trips. To Utah, in 2015, with a dog in tow you carry a ton of shit. To Hawaii, in 2015, we stayed in a hotel first then AirBNB secondly and only moved in between so we packed heavy. (Plus you don't really go shopping for fancy clothes in Hawaii; however, you also don't wear much other than a swimsuit so why didn't we packed 4 swimsuits?)
So, the challenge has been on, and we've met it perfectly. Our two backpacks (bought in 2008 and achingly has backpack straps that our late-30s bodies probably weren't intended to carry when fully filled but maybe we're just being angsty about the 4-inches lost due to the built-in straps) have room to spare and carry two large collapsed duffels for souvenirs.
I'm proud to say, we'll be carrying on our bags on the way there. Toiletries, you ask? We're turning one of our first stops after landing into a multi-purpose, advanced-level visit to pick up German toiletries and German Kopfküssen (pillows). We end up buying all German toiletries anyway, and Ryan needs every pillow in the hotel to survive the nights. Why haven't we figured that out until now.
Flight
Obsessively monitoring our flight schedule, the flight company (a UK charter airline), I'm very excited to take the direct 767-300ER from Austin to Frankfurt. It actually molded much of our itinerary and now we've created a very exciting trip back to Celtic and Roman times, an appetite initially whetted by visits to Bath, England and an ongoing curiosity to us. We're keeping transportation to basics. Cars, bikes, feet.
Winding our way counter-clockwise
After an evening in Frankfurt, we'll depart on a counter-clockwise tour heading northwest to the Mosel River and spending most of a week studying the length of it, from Koblenz where it dumps into the Rhine, to Bielstein which perches plumply on the side, to Trier that ancient city, down to the Vosges mountains where the Alsace region houses wine, a flip-floppy history, and the source of the Mosel. Then, onto Baden-Baden a spa down we visited ten years ago on our first trip to Europe. Oh, we'll also have a birthday celebration in the town as Ryan spends another birthday abroad.
